Eligibility

• Any artist over 18 may submit, in the UK, EU, and outside the EU.
• Acceptable media: Oils. Acrylic and water-soluble oil paint is acceptable if framed as an oil, so as not to spoil the general appearance of the exhibition.
• Wide mounts between painting and frame, as in watercolours, are not acceptable.
• Glazed work is not encouraged.
• Unframed work can be accepted if on a well-presented box canvas.
• A maximum of six works may be submitted, from which a maximum of three works may be selected.
• The combined measurement of works accepted will not exceed 8 feet maximum per artist.
• This year’s mini theme is ‘Urban Life’, which can be interpreted widely. Artists are encouraged to contribute a work on the theme, however it is not compulsory. If a work is on the theme, please elaborate on how in the artwork description box when applying.
• Work must have been completed within the last three years and must not have been previously shown at Mall Galleries.
• Work must be for sale, unless portraits.
• Works that are poorly presented or differ significantly from the photograph entered will not be exhibited.

Entry Fee

• There is a non-refundable submission fee of £20 per work for standard entries and £14 per work for artists aged 35 or under. The entry fee includes free admission to the exhibition, normally £5.

Presentation, Delivery & Collection

• All selected works must be exhibition-ready. Works should be sufficient to withstand mirror plating for hanging purposes.
• No hooks are required and there should be no projections whatsoever from the back of the works. This is to prevent damage to other works.
• Metal frames and clip frames are inadmissible. Glazed works with unprotected glass edges are inadmissible. Diffused picture glass is unacceptable. Frames and mounts of an unusual colour, size or design may prejudice the chance of selection.
• Packaging from delivered works cannot be retained and must be taken away at the point of delivery. We are unable to wrap works or provide wrapping materials for any works being returned.
• Paintings should be completely dry at the time of delivery.
• Any uncollected works may be removed from the gallery after the collection day and stored by an independent courier company at the artist's expense.
• If works are not collected within 12 months of the collection day, the gallery will be entitled to destroy, sell, or otherwise dispose of the works without consent, prior notification, or compensation to the artist.
• Artists are responsible for the full costs of delivery and collection.

Selection

• The Selection Committee is formed of artist members of the Institute and is rotated annually. Selectors' decisions are final and we are unable to offer feedback.

Sales

• Unless otherwise advised, the gallery will charge a commission on the total price paid for works, including commissioned works, before, during, or as a result of the exhibition.
• Once work has been submitted, any sale made by the gallery before or during the course of the exhibition shall take precedence and supersede one made privately. Any private sale will incur the normal commission.
• The price of works must include the commission of 45% plus VAT. If an artist is registered for VAT, then the VAT due on the selling price of the Works should be included in the price submitted.
• The minimum sale price is £500.
• The price provided is the selling price and is the price that the work must be sold at. This price can only be changed by prior written agreement between the gallery and the artist of the relevant work. The gallery reserves the right to query the price of works.
• International Artists: Artists who are not resident in the UK but are resident in the EU or elsewhere are welcome to submit work. If your work is sold at the exhibition you have a responsibility to register and account for UK VAT with H.M. Revenue & Customs. Artists without a UK residence (known as 'NETPs' - non-established taxable persons) can find further details on 'NETP' status and how to register for VAT at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk (HM Revenue & Customs Reference: Notice 700/1, Mar 2014) under the heading 'Should I be registered for VAT?' Intellectual Property Rights

• All works must be an original creation by the artist.
• The copyright and all other intellectual property rights will remain with the artist. If any rights are owned by a third party, that third party will remain the owner.
• The gallery has the right to reproduce works in connection with the exhibition.

Personal Data

• The gallery will hold personal data in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). However the gallery may provide third parties with an artist’s contact details in the course of administering exhibitions, commissions and prizes.

Liability & Indemnity

• The gallery is not responsible for any loss of, or any damage to, works entrusted to them. All goods are at artist owner’s risk absolutely and the gallery and/or their agents exclude all liability to the maximum extent permitted by law. The galleries are used for various purposes and so artists are advised to insure their works against all risks.
• The gallery endeavours to take good care of works sent for exhibition, but in the event of a work sent being lost, destroyed or damaged the gallery’s liability (if any) shall not exceed the value of the work as stated at the time of submission (less 45% plus VAT) or any altered price subsequently.
• In the event of any dispute regarding loss or damage, the dispute shall be referred for final arbitration to an independent expert valuer to be chosen by agreement between the parties, provided that the arbitrator’s award shall not exceed the gallery’s maximum liability as above.
• Artists shall indemnify and keep indemnified the gallery against any actions between the artist and any third party.

• Work should be based on representing the world’s wildlife. Wildlife includes any non-domestic animal such as birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, crustaceans and insects. Work will not be accepted if it is of botanical subjects, pets and domestic animals, or decorative wares (such as vessels or tiles).
• Works depicting wildlife divorced from its environment or without place, setting or context are rejected in many cases. Biological or scientific illustrations are in most cases not permissible.
• The Society receives many submissions that are obviously direct copies from photographs. Whilst some of the member artists use photographs for reference, the majority of artists create their work in response to their own experience of wildlife and spend many hours observing and sketching in the field. This knowledge of the subject is evident in the resulting work. Artists thinking of submitting should consider choosing a subject to which they can have access.
• Acceptable media: Work may be in any medium including drawing, painting, sculpture and original prints (if prints, please detail edition and how many are available). The SWLA is keen to embrace new and innovative mediums and will accept computer-generated images as ‘original prints’. However, a digital print is only considered an original print if it was created by the artist to be realised specifically as a print. Reproductions of paintings or photographs will not be accepted.
• All work must be for sale. The price of works must include commission of 45%+VAT (please note that where foundry fees apply, foundry costs will be deducted before commission is calculated).
• Minimum price: £200 - except for prints: framed £120, unframed £95 (buyers will not be charged for postage and packaging of unframed prints, so please ensure the price of unframed prints allows for this).

London's largest life drawing group, the Hesketh Hubbard Art Society, is offering three free year-long membership bursaries to young artists aged between 18 and 30.

The bursaries offer:

- The opportunity to attend weekly life drawing sessions at Mall Galleries free of charge for a year, starting from January 2024.

- Untutored sessions take place on Friday evenings and selected Monday evenings, between 6:00pm and 8:15pm. (Understandably there might be times when artists are unable to attend sessions, however frequent absences may result in the bursary being withdrawn).

- Currently there are 44 sessions per year. Usually around 70 artists work from 3 models: the 'quick' 15 / 30 minute nude poses, the two hour 'long' nude pose and the two hour clothed portrait pose. The sessions offer an opportunity for serious artists to develop their skills and artistic interpretation of the human figure in a stimulating and supportive atmosphere.

- Mentoring and support for each recipient will be provided at the beginning of the bursary period.

Who is eligible?

- The bursaries are for young artists aged between 18 and 30 at the close of submissions.

- The bursaries are intended for those who have had limited access to life and portrait drawing and painting, rather than artists who are already accomplished in this field.

- Artists can work in any medium or media, except those that cause damage or disruption to the galleries. For example dip pens and ink are not allowed due to the risk of staining the gallery floor.

- Selected artists must obey the Society’s Code of Conduct.

How to Apply

All applications must be submitted online, free of charge, following which shortlisted artists will be invited for interview:

• Upload up to five example images of your work, an Artist Biography, and your Artist Statement to the Mall Galleries’ Open Exhibition Submission System (OESS) between Friday 22 September and Friday 3 November 2023.
  • Images must be in JPEG or PNG format, under 5MB, and represent the human figure.
  • The Artist Statement should be up to 300 words and answer the question, 'How will the bursary help to develop your artistic practice?'
• Log in to your account on the OESS from 12 noon on Friday 10 November to see if you have been shortlisted for interview.
• If so, attend your interview at Mall Galleries, 17 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5BD on Friday 17 November.
  • Shortlisted artists will be asked to present a small portfolio to help with the discussion of their practice during the informal, face-to-face interview.
  • The interview panel will comprise representatives from the Hesketh Hubbard Art Society and Mall Galleries.
• The three winners will be announced on the Mall Galleries website at 12 noon on Wednesday 22 November, before the bursaries begin in January 2024.

About the Hesketh Hubbard Art Society

The Hesketh Hubbard Art Society is the largest and most prestigious life drawing society in London, with over 120 members.

The Society was established in 1930 by a committee of the Royal Society of British Artists to address the shortage of life drawing opportunities at that time. The committee was chaired by Eric Hesketh Hubbard (1892–1957), who went on to become president of the RBA. The Society was originally known as the RBA 'Drawing Club'. After Hesketh Hubbard’s death in 1957, the Society was renamed in his honour.

Today, as then, the Society offers both amateur and professional artists the opportunity to draw and paint a wide selection of life models in a stunning gallery setting.

• The selection will be made entirely online and the image of the work must be representative of the original work to ensure that a fair selection has been made.
• The Society and Mall Galleries reserves the right to refuse any selected work that does not arrive on time, varies radically from the original photographic image submitted or is poorly framed.
